The Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump combines the greenest heat pump solution with the latest technology. It is available in various sizes to meet both residential and commercial needs. When sizing for residential installations, the capacity is determined based on an ambient temperature of -7°C. The Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump is suitable for both new constructions and replacements for gas or oil boilers in existing homes.
The Nordic Propane R290 heat pump handles both heating and domestic hot water production in one unit. Recently, prices for well-known brands like Panasonic, LG, Vølund, and Vaillant have risen significantly. With the upcoming introduction of propane solutions from these manufacturers, prices are expected to rise further. However, with the Nordic Propane R290, we maintain the same price level as traditional refrigerant solutions like R32 and R410A.
Propane, a hydrocarbon consisting of three carbon atoms, is commonly used in bottled gas. It is a flammable refrigerant and is colorless with a boiling point of -42.09°C. Its chemical composition and physical properties make propane the optimal refrigerant solution for air-to-water heat pumps. It can achieve high water temperatures of 70°C without high refrigerant pressure, unlike R32 and R410A. This high temperature is beneficial for Legionella prevention and when replacing existing gas or oil heating systems.
Old water systems designed for gas or oil heating may require higher water temperatures than heat pumps with R32 and R410A can provide. R290/propane shares similar properties with R22, which was once the most commonly used refrigerant for air-to-water heat pumps. R22 was phased out due to its negative environmental impact. One of the key reasons to choose propane and the Nordic Propane R290 heat pump is that the refrigerant contains no PFAS or PFOS.
In the Nordic air-to-water heat pump series, there are several different sizes of propane heat pumps suitable for commercial buildings. The size required depends on several factors, including the size of the building, the insulation level, and the need for domestic hot water. Data on previous energy consumption, such as oil or gas usage, can also play a role in determining the appropriate size. Based on experience, we multiply the square meters by 50W per square meter as a simple guideline. When choosing a propane air-to-water heat pump, the decision is driven by the desire for a green and sustainable solution.
Unlike R32 or R410A, which are the most commonly used refrigerants today, propane has a minimal impact on global warming and contains no harmful substances like PFAS. We have installed numerous heat pumps using propane as the refrigerant, without any safety issues. The construction of propane air-to-water heat pumps follows strict regulations to ensure safety.
