Nordic propane R290 monoblock air/water heat pump
The Nordic propane R290 air-to-water heat pump combines the greenest heat pump solution with the latest technology. It is available in various capacities, with more sizes coming soon. Suitable for both residential and commercial installations, it is dimensioned for homes based on performance at -7°C ambient temperature. It is ideal for both new buildings and replacing existing gas or oil boilers.
The heat pump manages both heating and domestic hot water production in one unit. Recent price increases from major brands like Panasonic, LG, Vølund, and Vaillant will rise further with the introduction of propane by well-known players. However, the Nordic propane R290 allows us to maintain the same price level as traditional chemical refrigerant solutions such as R32 and R410A.
What is propane, and why is it a good refrigerant?
Propane, composed of three carbon atoms, is a hydrocarbon also used in bottled gas. It is a flammable, colorless gas with a boiling point of -42.09°C. Its chemical composition and physical properties make propane the optimal refrigerant for air/water heat pumps. It allows high water temperatures (up to 70°C) without high refrigerant pressure, unlike R32 and R410A, making it ideal for replacing gas or oil systems and ensuring Legionella safety. Older homes designed for gas or oil systems may require higher water temperatures than R32 and R410A heat pumps can deliver. R290/propane has similar properties to R22, which was once the most commonly used refrigerant for air-to-water heat pumps before it was phased out due to its negative environmental impact.
One of the main reasons to choose propane and the Nordic propane R290 heat pump is that the refrigerant does not contain PFAS or PFOS.
Propane refrigerant will become the future standard. Traditional chemical refrigerants containing PFAS and PFOS are harmful to human health and the environment. All major heat pump brands on the Danish market (Panasonic, LG, Vølund, Vaillant) will soon present propane solutions. The Nordic propane R290 private label offers the right propane heat pump solution at the right price. The propane R290 solution is equally eligible for subsidies as heat pumps using other refrigerants.
The Nordic propane R290 heat pump is only available as a monoblock solution. Due to strict regulations, the refrigerant must not enter the building. As a result, split systems, which have been popular, can no longer be used.

Although the refrigerant R290 is flammable, the heat pump’s design adheres to strict regulations, ensuring the solution is safe.
Private customers can reduce their electricity prices if consumption exceeds 4000 kWh per year. Therefore, it’s advantageous to acquire both an air/water heat pump and an electric car. Many people choosing district heating overlook this, which is another reason to avoid the costly district heating solution. With district heating, you’re tied to a large debt, but with a heat pump, you can switch electricity providers.
The GWP value (Global Warming Potential) of R290 or propane is 3, making it a highly environmentally friendly choice compared to R32 or R410A, which have GWP values exceeding 700.
Propane refrigerant for air-to-water heat pumps is the replacement for older chemical refrigerants like R22 and R502, which were phased out due to their damaging effects on the greenhouse effect. R290, used in air-to-water heat pumps, is a hydrocarbon refrigerant with the chemical formula C3H8. Although propane is flammable and explosive, R290 used in air-to-water heat pumps is not dangerous. The refrigerant circulates in a hermetically sealed piping system during heat pump operation, and it only becomes flammable or explosive when mixed with oxygen and exposed to heat or an open flame. As long as the refrigerant remains contained within the system, no dangerous situation can arise.
The heat pump’s closed system is housed within the unit, which is placed outside the building. Should a leak occur, all electrical components are carefully tested to ensure no sparks that could ignite propane. In summary, for fire or explosion to occur, three conditions must be present: the correct mix of oxygen and propane, a spark, or an open flame. The amount of refrigerant in the heat pump is very small, so if a leak occurs, the concentration of propane will quickly drop to a non-flammable level. Propane is also used in camper stoves and circulates inside the vehicle. Accidents involving propane are extremely rare, so there is no greater risk of using propane in a heat pump.
