Nordic Propane R290 Monoblock Air/Water Heat Pump – Efficient and Suitable for Commercial Buildings
The Nordic propane R290 air-to-water heat pump combines the greenest heat pump solution with the latest technology. The Nordic propane R290 air/water heat pump is available in many different sizes in terms of capacity, and more sizes are on the way. The Nordic propane R290 can be used for both private home installations and commercial installations. For home installations, the dimensioning is based on the capacity at an ambient temperature of -7°C. The Nordic propane R290 air/water heat pump can be used for both new buildings and for replacing gas or oil boilers in existing residences.
The Nordic propane R290 air/water heat pump handles both heating and domestic water production in the same unit. There have generally been significant price increases for all the well-known brands such as Panasonic, LG, Vølund, and Vaillant air-to-water heat pumps. With the imminent introduction of propane from these well-known manufacturers, prices will increase further. With Nordic propane R290, we can maintain the same price level as traditional chemical refrigerant solutions such as R32, R410A, etc.
What is propane and why is it a good refrigerant?
Propane consists of three carbon atoms and is classified as a hydrocarbon, also used in bottled gas. Propane is a flammable refrigerant. It is a colorless gas with a boiling point of -42.09°C. Its chemical composition and physical properties make propane the optimal refrigerant solution for air/water heat pumps. It can achieve high water temperatures of 70°C without high refrigerant pressure, unlike R32 and R410A. The high temperature is a great advantage for Legionella protection and when the heat pump replaces existing gas and oil boiler solutions. Water systems in older homes, designed for gas or oil boiler solutions, may require higher water temperatures than heat pumps with R32 and R410A can provide. R290/propane has similar properties to R22, which was previously the most commonly used refrigerant for air/water heat pumps. The chemically manufactured refrigerant R22 was phased out years ago due to its very negative impact on the greenhouse effect. One of the key reasons to choose propane and the Nordic propane R290 heat pump is that the refrigerant does not contain PFAS or PFOS.

In the Nordic air-to-water heat pump series, there are several different sizes of propane heat pumps suitable for commercial buildings. The size used in a particular case depends on many different factors. The following factors are crucial in determining which model to use: the size of the building to be heated, how well it is insulated, and how much hot water is needed. If data on previous consumption of oil, gas, or other technology is available, it can be a decisive factor in choosing the size of the air-to-water heat pump. Based on experience with heating, we multiply the square meter area by 50W per square meter. This value is a very simple indication or rule of thumb for sizing and cannot stand alone in the final decision. Once the capacity has been determined, and the type of heat pump has been selected, the choice of propane air-to-water heat pump is based on the desire for a green and sustainable solution. R32 or R410, which are currently the most commonly used solutions, do not affect capacity but have a negative impact on the greenhouse effect and other harmful substances such as PFAS contained in the refrigerants, which is why these solutions are rejected. We have installed many heat pumps with propane as the refrigerant and have not encountered any safety issues. The construction of propane air-to-water heat pumps follows very strict requirements set by authorities to prevent accidents.
We have tested this new air/water heat pump, primarily aimed at commercial buildings. Our experience is that the heat pump is very quiet, especially considering its capacity. The manufacturer has put a lot of effort into reducing this kind of disturbance from the heat pump. The system can be cascaded up to 15 units, offering great flexibility in terms of capacity, and it can be easily expanded if necessary.
