Nordic Propane R290 Monoblock Air/Water Heat Pump
The Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump combines the greenest heat pump solution with the latest technology. Available in various capacities, with more sizes on the way, the Nordic Propane R290 can be used for both private residential installations and commercial applications. When sizing for residential use, the system’s capacity is calculated based on an ambient temperature of -7°C. It is suitable for both new constructions and for replacing gas or oil boilers in existing homes.
The Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump handles both heating and hot water production in a single unit. In recent times, there have been significant price increases among well-known brands such as Panasonic, LG, Vølund, and Vaillant for their air-to-water heat pumps. With the upcoming introduction of propane by major manufacturers, prices are expected to rise further. However, with the Nordic Propane R290, we are able to maintain the same price level as traditional chemical refrigerants like R32 and R410A.
What is Propane and Why is it a Good Refrigerant?
Propane is a hydrocarbon made up of three carbon atoms and is also used in bottled gas. It is a flammable refrigerant and is a colorless gas with a boiling point of -42.09°C. Its chemical makeup and physical properties make propane the optimal refrigerant for air-to-water heat pumps. It can achieve high water temperatures of up to 70°C without creating high refrigerant pressures, unlike R32 and R410A. This high temperature is especially beneficial for Legionella prevention and when replacing existing gas or oil boilers. Water systems in older homes designed for gas or oil heating may require higher water temperatures than those provided by heat pumps using R32 or R410A. R290/propane shares characteristics with R22, which was once the most commonly used refrigerant for air-to-water heat pumps. The synthetic refrigerant R22 was phased out years ago due to its negative impact on the environment. One of the main reasons to choose propane and the Nordic Propane R290 heat pump is that the refrigerant contains no PFAS or PFOS.
Propane will become the primary refrigerant solution of the future. Why use traditional chemical refrigerants containing PFAS and PFOS, which are harmful to human health and the environment? All major heat pump suppliers known in the Danish market, such as Panasonic, LG, Vølund, and Vaillant, will soon offer propane-based solutions. The Nordic Propane R290 private label offers an affordable propane heat pump solution. The R290 propane solution is just as eligible for subsidies as heat pumps using other refrigerants.
The Nordic Propane R290 heat pump is only available as a monoblock solution. Due to strict regulations, the liquid/gas refrigerant must not enter the building, which is why split systems, once very popular, are no longer viable.
The Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump comes with full monitoring from the moment it is connected to the power supply.
The Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump is the greenest solution in heat pump technology due to its refrigerant. There are no other alternatives.
The R290 refrigerant is a flammable liquid/gas, but the design of the unit, due to strict safety regulations, ensures there is no need for concern.
For private customers, electricity costs can be reduced if annual consumption exceeds 4000 kWh. This makes it beneficial to have both an air-to-water heat pump and an electric car. Many people opting for district heating overlook this. Again, this is an important reason to avoid the costly district heating option. With district heating, you are locked into a large debt, whereas with a heat pump, you can change your electricity supplier.
The GWP (Global Warming Potential) value of R290 or propane is 3, which is a key reason to choose this solution. GWP is a measure of a refrigerant’s environmental impact. The low GWP value of R290 makes it the better choice for air-to-water heat pumps compared to R32 or R410A, which have GWP values exceeding 700.
Propane refrigerant is the replacement for old chemical refrigerants like R22 and R502. These were phased out due to their harmful impact on global warming. R290 used in air-to-water heat pumps is a hydrocarbon refrigerant with the chemical formula C3H8. While R290 or propane is flammable and explosive, it is not dangerous when used in air-to-water heat pumps. During operation, the refrigerant circulates in a hermetically sealed system that only contains propane. The refrigerant is only flammable and explosive when mixed with oxygen (O2) and exposed to heat or an open flame. As long as the refrigerant remains sealed in the system, no dangerous situation can arise. The closed system of the heat pump is housed entirely in the unit, which is placed outside the building. If a leak were to occur, all electrical components in the unit are thoroughly tested to ensure that no sparks could ignite the propane. In summary, unless the right mixture of oxygen and propane, along with a spark or open flame, is present, no fire or explosion can occur. The amount of refrigerant in the heat pump is very small, and in the event of a leak, the propane concentration will quickly dissipate, preventing a dangerous mixture. Propane is also used in stoves inside caravans, and it is extremely rare to hear of accidents. There is no greater risk of using propane in a heat pump.
We look forward to delivering your new Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump.

Technical Data:
The Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water system contains propane refrigerant, which has a higher viscosity than air. If leaks occur, the refrigerant collects at ground level. Caution is required as this could lead to an explosive or suffocating environment. A protected area around the unit is necessary, meaning it should not be placed near basements, windows, doors, or other areas where gas could accumulate. There should be no lamps, safety switches, or other potential ignition sources within this area. It’s essential to ensure that no structural changes are made to the building within this zone in the future.
The protected area around the Nordic Propane R290 air-to-water heat pump must be 1000 mm from the unit on all sides. If placed against a wall, the distance between the wall and the rear of the unit should be a maximum of 250 mm. On both sides, there must be a minimum of 1000 mm to the nearest window, door, or other openings.
